Waffle Cone Slouchy Hat Free Crochet Pattern

This is a very basic, mesh hat pattern! It’s a bit different than my other slouchy hats. This one is actually a skully hat that gets it’s slouchiness from being extra long. I think you’ll love making it! It’s super quick and I designed it to take only one skein of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick!

Yarn

Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick, #6 super bulky weight yarn: Approximately 80 yards of #146 Fig (purple) or #124 Barley (tan)

Materials

US Size N/13 (9mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge, yarn needle, scissors, tape measure

Size

22” around edge, 11” from top to edge.

Gauge

Work rounds 1-2, resulting circle should measure 5 inches across. 1 dc + 1 ch should = just under 1”.

Abbreviations

ch(s) – chain(s), sc – single crochet, dc – double crochet, st(s) – stitch(es), sl st – slip stitch, BLO – back loop only

Notes

1. Pattern is worked in joined rounds.
2. Ch 4 at beginning of rounds 1-11 will count as 1 dc + 1 ch.
3. Ch 1 at beginning of rounds 12 & 13 will count as 1 sc.

Instructions

Round 1: Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc + 1 ch now & throughout), [1 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 1] 7 times, sl st to 3rd ch to join – 8 dc + 8 ch 1 spaces.

Round 2: Ch 4, 1 dc in same st, ch 1, *1 dc in next st, ch 1, 1 dc in same st, ch 1; repeat from * around, sl st to 3rd ch to join – 16 dc + 16 ch 1 spaces.

Round 3: Ch 4, 1 dc in next st, ch 1, 1 dc in same st, ch 1, *1 dc in next st, ch 1, 1 dc in next st, ch 1, 1 dc in same st, ch 1; repeat from * around, sl st to 3rd ch to join – 24 dc + 24 ch 1 spaces.

Rounds 4 -11: Ch 4, *1 dc in next st, ch 1; repeat from * around, sl st to 3rd ch to join – 24 dc + 24 ch 1 spaces.

Round 12: Ch 1 (counts as 1 sc now & throughout), 1 sc in next ch space, *1 sc in next st, 1 sc in next ch space; repeat from * around, sl st to ch 1 to join – 48 sc.

Round 13: Ch 1, 1 sc in BLO in each st around, invisible join to ch 1 and fasten off – 48 sc.

  6. Julie, I am attempting to make your hat, and in the beginning you state to chain 4, and then dc in the 4th chain from the hook, then chain one, and dc in the same space. No problem, but then you say to repeat all the way around, am I dc on the underside of the chain 4 that I just created because I have no where to complete the remaining 6 dc? Pattern appears easy, but the beginning is not clear as to what needs to be done. Everyone says its easy, but I would appreciate a little more detail.
    I am getting back into crocheting after 30 years. Your assistance is appreciated.

  8. Thank you so much for this pattern! I used to crochet with my mom but it has been a while. It took me a bit of time to make sure I was doing it right.   13. Thanks for this great, quick pattern. I made it while watching tv tonight (between interruptions from my sweet granddaughter.) I used a lovely bulky brown handspun merino wool and it looks great.

  14. I love this pattern! I don’t think I used thick enough yarn for it, though, and my first try was way too loose. The next time I tried I made up for it by only single crocheting in the double crochet spaces to half the amount of stitches. Fashionable, easy, and quick to make! <3

  26. Hi, I am one of those crocheters that have attempted to make hats over and over and have had epic fails every time. This one although it looks easy the beginning is not fully explained enough. I understand that everything begins with a chain, however, it’s not clear enough as to what you do in doing the round from the chain.

    Could you edit this pattern to detail the beginning of it.

  29. I love this hat. However, I am relatively new at crocheting. So I don’t quite understand it all, but I’ve learned to follow step by step until I get it. I do understand how to read a pattern.
    Perhaps if you had a video. That might help me and other relatively new beginners a little better. I can see how young people will love this hat.

  44. I love this hat and tried to make it today. I had a little bit of difficulty following the pattern but it turned out pretty. The only problem is it turned out way too small and short with zero slouch. I used Caron Simply Soft trying to make it lighter, more of a springy type hat as it is starting to warm up around here. I also added a round of increases but it still was way roo small. It came out the size for a small child. Is it because I used the wrong yarn? I used the right hook and it looks fantastic.

    Just made this hat with some old Carron Simpy Soft Quick yarn (much thicker than regular). I added 3 or 4 more rows because the pattern wasn’t saggy enough for my taste. But I do love my finished product! Thanks!

    I would have to agree with others on the vague-ness of your pattern abbreviations at the beginning, and I did read your tutorial. As a tip, I would suggest photos of your important steps… I find it easier to follow patterns with photos to go off of also.

    1. Aw, Caron Simply Soft Quick! Do they make that anymore? I made my very first scarf with that when I first learned to crochet! :) It is the perfect size for this pattern. I’d love to see a picture of your hat with the extra slouchiness!

  46. Hey. So I get the 1st round. But am way confused on round 2. I have just left the dishcloth world to start crocheting other patterns. So I’m confused on the rnd 1 dc in same sp. ch 1. [1 dc, ch 1 twice in next dc] rep around. 
    Can you plz help me decipher? Thx

    1. When you start that round you ch 4. Then you’re going to make a dc in the same spot that you joined the last round. ch1. [Then dc in the next dc from the previous round. ch 1. make another dc in that same spot. ch 1.] repeat the part in brackets all the way around. I hope that helps :)

  48. hey just wanted to let you know i have been crocheting now for 3 years and i have never done anything other then scarfs and i didnt know how to read patterns till some one showed me how so i wanted to try something new that had a pattern that was easy for me to understand so i found your hat online and i like it… so i tried it and i wanted to let you know that the instructions were easy to read and under stand and i had no problem following your pattern also it was very fast to make i did it in like 45 mins.. now i have made 3 of the hats and i love them… thanks so much for posting it…

  49. Wonderful pattern – I got chunky 6 yesterday and it’s working perfectly. In the meantime I worked out how to do it with regular worsted and a 6.5mm hook – the hat looks super…..I went out to 29 dc (instead of 24) adding a round with a dc increase every 4…..and then made it the correct length by doing 14 or 15 rounds of mesh stitch before doing the last 2 rounds as per your pattern! Thank you!!!
