Easy Beginner Crochet Cables Video Tutorial
I remember when I was new to crochet, cables seemed intimidating. There was a lot of skipping and crossing stitches that just seemed like too much for my skill level at the time. It was always something I thought I’d come back to down the road when I was more experienced. I’m happy that I actually did come back to them because cables are pretty cool really, and a nice way to add texture to a project!
And I now can tell you that they aren’t really that scary! ;) For this tutorial, I came up with a really simple stitch pattern, that I think is a great place to start with cables. So, if you’ve never tried crochet cables before, give this one a shot! I promise, it’s easy to pick up and I’ve even provided a video tutorial for you to follow along with.
Before you get started, I recommend taking a look at the stitches used below and make sure you’re familiar with them before you attempt this. I do briefly show how to make a front post treble crochet in the emu casino video but it will just make it even easier for you to follow along if you know the stitches used ahead of time.
Abbreviations
ch(s) – chain(s), hdc – half double crochet, FPtr – front post treble crochet, st(s) – stitch(es), RS – right side
Special Stitches
Front Post Treble Crochet (FPtr) – Yarn over twice and insert hook behind stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, [yarn over and draw through two loops] three times.
Note:
Ch 1 in beginning of rows always counts as 1 hdc.
Instructions:
Row 1 (RS): Ch 11 (2 count as 1 hdc), 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across – 10 hdc.
Row 2: Ch 1 (counts as 1 hdc now & through out) & turn, 1 hdc in each st across – 10 hdc.
Row 3: Ch 1 & turn, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 FPtr in each of the next 4 sts 2 rows below, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts – 6 hdc + 4 FPtr.
Row 4: Ch 1 & turn, 1 hdc in each st across – 10 hdc.
Row 5: Ch 1 & turn, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, skip 2 sts, 1 FPtr in each of the next 2 sts 2 rows below, 1 FPtr in each of the 2 skipped sts 2 rows below, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts – 6 hdc + 4 FPtr.
Row 6: Ch 1 & turn, 1 hdc in each st across – 10 hdc.
Row 7: Ch 1 & turn, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 FPtr in each of the next 4 sts 2 rows below, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts – 6 hdc + 4 FPtr.
To continue working, repeat rows 4-7.
