Fair Isle Harbor Yarn Review

Today I want to tell you all about one of my current favorite yarns! I’m planning on using it for a few different designs this summer and am excited to share it with you!

I was browsing the yarn section at Jo-Ann’s and I came across a brand called Fair Isle, that I hadn’t seen before. They had several yarns in various weights, all pretty colors! But the one that caught my attention was called Harbor. It stood out to me for a few reasons. It was a lighter weight, cotton blend, and I could tell by the way it’s spun that it would have a really nice drape to it!

I’m always on the lookout for lighter weight yarns because it seems that they aren’t quite as common in craft stores and having such mild weather where I live, it just doesn’t make sense to create wearables out of heavy yarns very often. Harbor is a #2 sport weight yarn – one of my favorites! It’s thin, but not so thin that it takes forever to make something!

I really like Harbor’s fiber content as well. It’s 50% cotton, 50% Viscose (from bamboo). These are both very breathable fibers, which are awesome for warm weather projects! And I think it goes without saying that this is a very soft yarn that is really nice up against your skin!

There are nearly 30 colors available and they really have a little bit of everything! There are darks, bolds, brights, neutrals, and pastels. Personally, I really like their dark & neutral colors like Greenery, Fawn, and Pumpkin! But as you can probably tell, I haven’t been able to resist adding a little bit of everything to my stash! ;)

One of the first things I noticed about Harbor, the way that it’s spun, is actually both a good and bad thing. It’s spun loosely which unfortunately makes it split pretty easily. But that is also what gives it such a nice drape! Really, this yarn has an amazing drape to it, and because of that (and everything else it has going for it), I’m totally willing to put up with the splitting. It just takes a little more patience than usual and to me, it’s worth it.

There are 321 yards/3.5 ounces in a skein of Harbor, which I think is pretty generous. I was able to make my Catalina Crop Tank all the way up to a size large using just one skein! It’s priced right around $5, depending on where you look, so to be able to make a whole project for that little sounds good to me!

As I was saying, I used this for my Catalina Crop Tank, and it gave it a really nice drape and flowiness, that I love! I already have plans to make more tanks with it but am also wanting to try it with my XOXO Kimono pattern and maybe even a bikini! I would absolutely recommend trying it with wraps & shawls too!

Have you tried Fair Isle Harbor? What did you think of it? What did you make with it?
