Tree Hugger Mittens Free Crochet Pattern

I designed these Tree Hugger Mittens for the Crochet Mitten Drive, which is a fun way for crocheters to help people in need. 15 designers, including myself, have teamed up to bring you 15 free mitten patterns for this good cause! Every Friday from 9/11 – 12/18, one of us will share a new mitten pattern for you to make and hopefully donate to someone who needs them. You can read all about it in our Facebook group, see everyone else’s mittens & show off your own!

Special Stitches

Spike Stitch – Spike stitches are used in rounds 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 (women’s size) and rounds 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 (men’s size). In those rounds you will be instructed to “1 sc in st below next st.” – this is the spike stitch. A spike stitch is simply a single crochet that is made in the previous round rather than the current one. If you were making a normal single crochet, you would put it where the X is in the photo below. Instead you will make it in the same stitch that that stitch is in, in the previous round, where the arrow is pointing in the photo below.

What you will do is insert your hook into that stitch (where the arrow is pointing, in the previous round), draw up a loop to the height of the current round and finish your single crochet as normal.

Gauge

16 sc and 17 rows = 4”

Notes

• Pattern is worked in continuous rounds without joining. You will want to use a stitch marker to help you keep track of your rounds. The final 4 rounds are worked in joined rounds.

• The thumb is made first and then the mitten is worked from the finger tips to the wrist, joining the thumb to the mitten at round 24 (women’s size) / round 26 (men’s size).

Color Changes: During rounds 11 – 21 (women’s size) & rounds 13 – 23 (men’s size), you will be doing color changes. When you get to the last stitch of each odd numbered round, you will draw up a loop, then to finish that sc, use the new color as shown in the photos below. There is no need to fasten off after each color change, just drop the color when you’re done with it and pick up the new one.

Joining the thumb (round 24 of women’s size/ round 26 of men’s size):

First you will be working in the mitten, then around the thumb, then back to the other side of the mitten.

You’ll be left with a hole that needs to be stitched shut:

Adding elastic to the wrist (round 37 of women’s size/ round 41 of men’s size):

You will be making your stitches around the elastic. To do this, pull up your first loop under the elastic, and then the second one, over the elastic.
